Chapter 16
Oh, good. That was a brilliant alternative.
Maybe more information would help me find a better Plan B. âDarcy, have you ever been married?â
He stared at me, obviously â and understandably â flummoxed by the question. âUh, no.â
I debated how much to tell him. After all, he was a human and maybe it was better he retained some of his naivety. Except I needed to know why Aza chose him, and the best way I could think of to figure it out was to lay all the cards on the table. âI do believe you, Darcy. And I think I know who â whatâs following you. Itâs a faery named Aza.â
Darcy frowned. âThat term is incredibly offensive.â
âWhat? No. Not â not that kind of â no, a faery. A member of the fey.â I watched this sink in before I went on. âHeâs also a serial killer, I guess youâd call him. He likes to kill cheaters. Men who cheat on their wives.â
He got a funny look on his face, like he just threw up a little in his mouth. âOh.â
âAnd youâre not married, never been married. But have you ever cheated on a serious girlfriend? Or, um, boyfriend?â I didnât want to be accused of discrimination again.
âNo, I â not exactly.â
Jesus, this was an awkward conversation. I didnât want to pry any deeper into his personal life. I didnât want to see behind the curtain. But since when did what I wanted matter a damn bit? âBut thereâs something? Something that might fall into the realm of cheating?â
He hesitated, then nodded.
I was going to die of old age before he elaborated. âDarcy, Iâm sorry. Really. You have no idea how badly I want to end this conversation. But if Iâm going to help you, I need to know what happened.â
He seemed to shrink before my eyes. His shoulders slumped, his head drooped. âI slept with my neighbor.â
âOkay.â
âMy married neighbor.â
I worked very hard to keep any reaction out of my voice. âOkay.â
âWho has a little baby.â
Was this really Darcy saying these things? âOkay.â
âAnd it wasnât just the one time.â
âOkay.â
His head shot up. âWould you say something else, please? Anything else?â
If I tried to string more than two syllables together, I was afraid my shock would show. I never in a million years wouldâve thought Darcy would sleep with a married soccer mom. Well, probably the kid didnât play soccer yet. âIs the baby yours?â
âNo! God. Of course not.â His head hung down again. âBut the baby was right in the next room, when we â well. And Brian found out. I think Sarah actually has feelings for me. But â I just needed to feel better. To forget things for a while. It was right after my sister was diagnosed, and it was stage four, they said she maybe had six months, and I had to be strong for her, but I felt so alone. I felt lost. And Sarah was right there, and she was so nice, and one thing led to another, andâ¦â
I bit my tongue to keep from saying okay.
